Manual Handling Training
What is it?
Manual Handling Training focuses on protecting employees from the risks of injury due to manual handling tasks at work. It covers a range of activities, such as lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (amended in 2002) apply to these activities.
Incorrect manual handling is one of the leading causes of injury at work, contributing to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which account for over a third of all workplace injuries.
Why do we need it?
Employers are legally required under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations to:
Avoid hazardous manual handling tasks where possible.
Assess the risk of injury from unavoidable hazardous manual handling tasks.
Reduce the risk of injury from manual handling to the lowest practical level.
By adhering to these guidelines, employers can prevent MSDs and ensure a safer working environment for staff.
When should we do it?
Although it’s impossible to completely eliminate risk, adhering to general risk assessment guidelines significantly reduces the likelihood of injury. Employers must:
Avoid lifting tasks where possible.
Assess and reduce risks associated with lifting tasks that can’t be avoided.
Focus on high-risk operations to ensure proper risk assessments have been made.
If any lifting is involved in your workplace, Manual Handling Awareness Training is essential.
