Fire Extinguisher Servicing

Fire Extinguisher Servicing

What is it?

Fire extinguisher servicing ensures your workplace’s fire safety equipment is always in top condition. Regular servicing and maintenance guarantee that extinguishers are available and functional when needed most.

Why do we need it?

To comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, all fire safety equipment, including extinguishers, must be maintained in an efficient state, in working order, and in good repair.

Failing to service fire extinguishers can lead to:

  • Violation of health and safety regulations

  • Non-compliance with local authority guidelines

  • Breaching your insurance policy, potentially invalidating fire-related claims

  • Malfunctioning extinguishers during a fire emergency

Proper servicing ensures you are compliant, insured, and prepared.

When should we do it?

Employers have a legal responsibility under the Fire Safety Order (FSO) to regularly service fire extinguishers. Here’s what’s required:

  1. Annual Professional Servicing:

    • Fire extinguishers must be serviced once a year by a qualified engineer.

    • This comprehensive check ensures they are in full working order and comply with BS 5306 standards.

  2. Weekly Site Checks:

    • Employers or designated staff should perform weekly visual inspections, checking for:

      • Signs of damage

      • Loss of pressure

      • Missing or broken tamper seals or tags

      • Any obstructions to the extinguisher's visibility and accessibility

  3. 5-Year Extended Servicing:

    • Depending on the type, extinguishers may also require more in-depth servicing every 5 years (e.g., refills or internal inspections).

By adhering to these schedules, you can ensure your extinguishers remain effective and compliant.

"I have your engineer onsite now testing our fire extinguishers.

Firstly, he is very knowledgeable and that is exactly what we needed.

I felt our old company were just selling us products rather than doing what we actually needed."
