Fire Alarm Testing

Fire Alarm Testing

What is it?

A functional fire alarm system is a vital safety measure in any workplace. As outlined in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must ensure the premises are equipped with appropriate fire alarms and detectors.

A well-maintained fire alarm system provides early warnings that save lives and help firefighters limit property damage.

Why do we need it?

Over time, fire alarm components can degrade:

  • Smoke detectors may lose sensitivity.

  • Batteries in control panels can weaken.

  • General faults can develop, leading to false alarms or undetected fires.

Regular testing and maintenance are essential to ensure your system remains reliable and compliant with safety regulations.

For more details, see the government's fire safety guidance.

When should we do it?

Fire alarm testing should be conducted at these intervals:

  • Weekly: Basic checks can be performed in-house—we’ll show you how.

  • 6-Monthly: Requires inspection and maintenance by a qualified engineer.

  • Annually: Comprehensive testing by a qualified engineer is mandatory.

How do we do it?

Office Compliance Management ensures your fire alarm system is designed, installed, and maintained appropriately for your premises.

Here’s how we test:

  1. Device Functionality

    • All smoke and heat detectors are tested to ensure they operate correctly.

    • Manual call points (red break glass units) are activated and checked.

  2. Audibility Assessment

    • Bells and sounders are operated to confirm they deliver sufficient sound levels throughout your premises.

  3. System Integrity

    • Fire alarm panels, batteries, and accessible cable joints are inspected for faults.

  4. Logbook Recording

    • All checks are meticulously documented in your fire alarm logbook, ensuring you meet compliance requirements.

With regular testing and professional maintenance from Office Compliance Management, you can trust that your fire alarm system will provide reliable protection when you need it most.
